A wood veneer sheet is a thin sliced piece of wood that is made by sawing through a log. It can be sold as either a raw wood veneer, or is spliced with other raw veneers to produce a larger wood veneer sheet.

When we are talking about veneer sheets, it is usually the case that this means a larger piece of spliced together veneer such as a four by eight foot sheet that will be used over a full sheet of MDF for example.

It is usually priced by the square foot, 32 square feet per 4' x 8' sheet for example. So if you see prices listed, make sure you are aware that you might have to do some multiplication to come up with the total sheet price.

It is much more economical to buy veneer in this manner however as you will definitely save on volume discount.

Veneer sheets are usually packaged in boxes and sold in rolls with multiple layers all rolled up together. This is differentiated from a batch of flitch veneer which is usually sold in flat layers, because the order of the veneer slices becomes important in a flitch.

They also come preformatted in various different ways, such as raw, paperbacked or phenolic backed. The backing layer will have different thicknesses, usually standard at 10 millimeters, or 22.2 millimeters. This will affect the total thickness of the veneer.

Most raw veneers are cut to about 1/32" thick, however this will depend on the species as some are more brittle than others. There will always be a minor variation. Whether the veneer sheet comes with a backing layer will also affect the thickness of the veneer.

Another benefit of buying full sheets of veneer is that it saves time in the workshop of having the splice together smaller pieces yourself. The time saved can often be cost beneficial to the money saved of buying smaller less expensive pieces of veneer.

However, the main usage of full sheet veneers is to laminate over full or large pieces of MDF or particle board substrate that will then be machined into smaller cabinet parts.
